I do like your thinking, though that may be taking it to the extreme just a tad.

Re: What next??
Spent weeks last year looking for one of those (despite not being fat and middle aged). 230 compressor avantgarde was what I wanted. Every one I saw was a dog. Love the styling, interior and performance but all reports suggest the build quality is terrible.
Re: What next??
Just thought it was something a little bit interesting.

Re: What next??
I'd buy one if I could find a good one. This looks interesting although a little overpriced.

Re: What next??
Very nice cars indeed. But that one being a 1997 is right in the middle of the "iffy engine" era and being on 57,000 means it is just about at the place where the nikasil liners will start washing away and it will smoke like a *person without parents*! I had that very problem with mine. Try to find a slightly later one with alusil liners, make sure the twin vanos units are good and they are pretty much bulletproof.

Re: What next??
Ok thanks, was going to go and look at it tomorrow but will give it a miss now. Seen a V reg later shape one in Bristol with 80k on it but stretching my budget a bit.
Re: What next??
The E46 cars are nice but not quite the drivers car that the E36 is. It may still be worth looking at that one above, it may have been sorted under warranty or it may be one of the first cars with alusil liners. Easy enough to check. If it has been upgraded under warranty it will be documented in the service history. If it hasn't have a look at the doc below and this shows how to spot which liners it has.
You won't find many cars like that with only 57000 on the clock thats a fact.

I'm with you on this. I too wanted a 230K Avantgarde before deciding on the Boxster.
Lovely drive but every one I saw had rusted rear arches. Mercedes started using water based paint apparently and it didn't go well! The quote to have both rear arches sorted was £400 but I couldnt live with it ... Every CLK I've seen since, has rusty rear arches ... Unreal.
If you do go for one, buy a Y-reg or earlier to dodge the emissions based road tax!
Re: What next??
2k is a really difficult amount to spend....you need a Porsche 924, possibly an Auto that suits your individual style!
