Post by calisfar Thu 01 Jul 2010, 11:16

Josh is going to be 17 in about 2 months so just started checking out some insurance quotes. Using a well know comparison site with Russian zoological connections these were the BEST results. (age slightly fudged as he is not actually 17 yet)

94' pug 306 1.4

Me and the wife £250
Me, the wife and son on provisional £2500 Eeeek Icon_eek

Also did a sample as though he had just passed his test at 17 insuring under his own name

Thats really quite scary! Eeeek Icon_eek

Obviousley you know to ignore the online stuff and get a proper quote over the phone right?. The difference is immense.

Having said that, I would forget about insuring him until he at least has his full license and even then expect a four figure premium!

had that problem when i first starting driving aswell, the older the car the more expensive it is as you are more likely not to care if you hit something, went out and brought a family car ( vauxhall cavalier 1.6) and the insurance was only 800

Friend of mines brother had a m reg 306 1.6 2 years ago and was paying 2000 for it as his first car - no wonder teens dont insure the cars

That was the same for me when i started, i paid £1600 for a 1.6 astra full comp!!

Its cheaper to drive around with no insurance and just pay the fines if you get caught.

Yes ... but then you get banned and will be 40 before any insurer will touch you! You also won't get a job that requires a driving licence because of the endorsements.

in the same place my lad, got pxssd off with it, let us know where and what the deals that we're offered. I did an online comparison and had a quote of £2750 which they said on the phone was £1100 so they is a ridiculous amount of money to be saved. also noted the insurance group of cars doesn't seem to work, got quotes for some group 1-3 cars and some 4-6 cars and found some group 2 or 3 cars cost more than group 4-5 cars with the same insurers, they couldn't explain this although one mentioned it was down to popularity.

Can I be smug and point out that my renewal on the Porka has just come in at £98 fully comp! Eeeek Icon_twisted

Its all based around statistics. Young, inexperienced drivers have the biggest claim rate. Fact. So they are always going to pay more.
But think outside the box a little. Your average 17 or 18 year old drives a Corsa/Nova/Fiesta/Ka/Saxo/106/etc right? So those cars are going to show a higher claim rate in the stats. If you look at your traditional "Grandad" car (see saturn800 for details! Eeeek Icon_razz ) maybe a Volvo S60 or a diesel Mondeo, big Audi's and BMW's etc, then they will show a lower claim rate in the stats. Therefore your average 18 year old is going to get a better quote.
Try it. I insured a BMW 328 Coupe fully comp with unrestricted mileage, full legal cover and breakdown cover included for less than £300 per year. For a Saxo VTR they wanted over £400 without the legal cover and breakdown. Go figure.

This is true. When I was about 19 I coudn't get insurance on a 1.4 Metro but had no problem with a Rover 216 Vitesse which had similar book figures as a comparative age XR3i

Ah but Maestro's are not uncool. They have a huge cult retro following. Especially if they are painted hearing aid beige.
