Does the expense never end?
The Shed is demanding new tyres.
Not her fault to be fair, the previous owner (henceforth to be known as "the numpty") decided that the correct solution for "a harsh ride" was to drop the pressure by 0.5 bar in each corner. This has resulted in as classic a case of uneven tyre wear due to under-inflation as I have ever seen.
Since I am "fussy" about tyres (them being the only thing wot keeps me on the road), a new set of boots is waiting for her at my friendly mechanic's gaff.

Re: Does the expense never end?
Indeed not. One of those things that "has to be done" though, and with the mileage I have planned I should be good for a couple of years once they're on there.
I'm just irritated that the numpty decided to ruin a nice set of tyres in the first place. The car handles much better at the proper pressures. There's far less of a tendency for the back end to squirm around on corners.

Re: Does the expense never end?
Good tyres are so important on these cars and as you've pointed out the pressure makes a massive difference, half a bar is a huge pressure drop!!
What you booting it with, huge fan of Goodyear F1's myself

She's on original (although refurbished) Design 90s at the "as supplied" size for an S2 of 205/55 R16 fronts and 225/50 R16 rears. That limits the choice a bit.
I do like Goodyear Eagle F1s, I have a set of F1 GS-D3s on my daily-driver Golf; great in the dry, superb in the wet and comedy lack of traction if shown a snowflake. Unfortunately I can't get those in the same speed rating for the front and rear sizes. I'd have to put Ws on the front and Ys on the rear. Not a big deal as they're both over the V-max of the car but I'd prefer them to match.
So... She's getting a set of Bridgestone Potenza S-02 ZR N3s.

Re: Does the expense never end?
Must admit ive been lucky on tyres on all my cars, have only ever brought 1 tyre and that was when i hit a path while power sliding in my bmw 535
The fronty has got off road type tyres and i think they would rot before they lose tread - think they still got 25 mm left on them and the Bananas are still quite good even after nearly 4 years
Would hate to think how much tyres are now

Re: Does the expense never end?
I go through tyres at a fair old rate. I do about 30k a year (not in the '44 obviously) as all that trundling up and down to race tracks and other photo shoots soon adds up. It usually comes to a set a year for ye olde Golf.
The Golf normally has "touring" tyres on, the GS-D3s are an anomaly since they came nearly-new on the 16" alloys I put on there to sharpen the handling up a little bit after I'd had it fiddled with. Once they're done, she'll get another set of Bridgestone ER300s - a tyre that suits the car really well.
The old 15" alloys off of the Golf have a set of winter tyres on; Bridgestone Blizzak LM-25s. Those wheels go on the car in December and see me through until mid-March.

Re: Does the expense never end?
Ive had great results with my 'latest set of boots for the '68, Ive got 205/50/17" upfront, and 255/40/17" on the rear's, had the 'pilots' on there before, god they were noisy !, changed them for a set of Falken 452's got them online from tyretraders.co.uk . about £70 a boot, very pleased, did a lot of reading up, and these were getting some good feedback from various others via the 968 forums... good price too!, 5 months later still 'quiet' running, and great in the wet.

Re: Does the expense never end?
Mmm... looks like I could have gotten a set of Falken FK-452s to fit in "W" speed rating. About £90 cheaper for the set than the Bridgestones, too; that's significant. I'll bear them in mind for next time. Although I am partial to Bridgestone....
Perhaps this is the last time the Shed will get fancy N rated tyres

New boots fitted today. Much delayed due to a trip to Scotland to cull some deer.
HUGE improvement to the car. Steering is more positive and there's far less tram-lining.
