Tux kindly offered to help me pick up old 77 as i'm now calling it! My chap with the lorry has a lot on at the moment and i didn't want to miss a sunny w/e. So off we went to Rolls Royce in Derby. We originally thought of towing it with Tux's new tow rope, but i don't think he wanted to get it dirty so I rang the garage and booked it in for an MOT (ahem yes officer) and decided I would try to drive it.

While Tux was drooling over the Astons a quick spin round the industrial estate gave the impression that this might be a goer!

Once on the road, the brakes were quite badly siezed, causing the out of tune engine to pink. After a couple of miles we stopped in a cloud of brake smoke! No way would it make it back to mine, tux said it was only 4-5 miles to his, so we headed for this. We stopped after 2 miles with even more smoke, where Tux said he had told a porky and there was still 5 miles to go! The fluid had now boiled and i had no brakes at all! There was also what sounded like prop shaft banging and the rear was beginning to stear the car! We were also running out of petrol!
Tux informed me of the good news that he knew a short cut so we set off again! we nervously passed a police car who must have seen the smoke!
On a straight with no brake pedal the banging got worse and the car went out of control. I managed to get it onto the curb and come to a stop. The nice girl in the car following me kindly informed me that the back wheel had fallen off!!!
Well it was almost off, somehow it was resting on the hub at an odd angle with NO Bolts in it. We walked down the road and found one. the other wheels had only 2 or 3 bolts in all finger tight.

Tux had a jack so we put the wheel back on with 2 bolts, tightened the others and we set off again. This time i had NO BRAKES at all (the handbrake never worked) so we drove gently on. Tux at this point was getting nervous so elected to follow me Laughing
Slowly in built up traffic we made it back to Tuxs' where will continue this story tomorrow Laughing Laughing

There is one problem with that, when their car f***s up they remind you cars come 1st 2nd and 3rd and then point out that even though its their's its still a car and you'll enjoy the change interesting journey! 9350

An interesting Journey Part Deux

So having succesfully got the car back to mine last night, I set about sorting out the brakes. The "fluid" that came out was a bit thick to say the least, in actual fact it was more like thin mud. But heyho it was cleaned out and with the liberal application of WD40 and compressed air, the pistons were freed off. All rebuilt with fresh pads, bled up and we are onto a winner. I put the wheels back on and did the bolts up finger tight and awarded Chris the honour of doing up the bolts with the socket (didn't want another wheel falling off!).
A quick tweak of the timing and we were ready to go again. Waved Chris off from the end of the drive and started clearing up the garage abit.
Five minutes later my mobile rang. "tux, its Chris, the wheels fallen off again!" Don't know how the smeg that happened, but I drove up the road and there was a forlorn Toofah sans wheel at the side of the road, right under the speed camera. At least it was a different wheel this time. I couldn't fit a trolley jack under it so had to nip back and get the emergency jack from the Goof. With a bit of brute force, we got the wheel back on and bolted up. I decided to follow Chris up the road a while to make sure nothing else fell off, so Chris jumped in and turned the key and........ much whirring of the starter but no engine starting. Hot start problrm methinks.
Long story short, after 15 minutes or so we got it started and the rest of the jorney was uneventful!

So, just to recap, never, EVER go to pick up a new car with Chris!!! interesting journey! 52658
