very excited with my new purchase
just bought a 944 this morning and i'm over the moon always wanted one,but i have an ulterior motive,i intend to strip it and transfer the whole lot into a 924 shell,u all probably think i'm mad.
but if u lived here you would understand why, cheap tax insurance and no MOT.
here's some pics.
and the 924 i will be doing.

Interesting wheels.
Looks like you have a few long evenings to spend in the garage judging by the pics of the Toofah. Keep us up to speed with progress.

Look like Boxster wheels to me I'll pop off and have a look sure I've seen them somewhere.
Is that an oval dash car? Keep us posted with pics, this should be a very interesting one

The Dash seems to be the same as both my 924 Dashes, but it's badly cracked the car has been lying idle for the last 3 years, and to cap it off when i was loading it on the transporter i managed to break the front splitter, but it should be an easy fix.Mav666 wrote:Look like Boxster wheels to me I'll pop off and have a look sure I've seen them somewhere.

here's some pics of the Dash, incidently i was surprised that it has electric seats, boot opener, sunroof.
the interior is immaculate.

And its got the upgaded factory 10 speaker option door cards, those are replacements though, those dorr cards have come from a post 86 oval dash car.
The one advantage of that dash is that it'll be a direct refit into the 924.
The oval dash conversion is massive undertaking to change over and you'll never get it perfect, but then you can always do what Dave (Saturn800) did

Re: very excited with my new purchase
Do my eyes deceive me or is that an auto box on the '44? So it's a pre-85.5 2.5l Lux Auto. Are you going to keep it as an auto?
Re: very excited with my new purchase
Certianly is a pre 85.5, I suspect though that as the bulk of it is being transplanted into 924 that the transmission is staying as well.
The standard '24 transmission would fit, andcertainly wouldn't be up to the job!

Why?
There are plenty of 24's with more than 160 BHP in the states without problems, inc aftermarket Turbo's
They are fairly tough old birds

Re: very excited with my new purchase
well the plan is to use the manual box in the 924, as far as i can remember the 924 box is one of the strongest ,same as the beetle 1303 and sought after for racing, over here anyway.Mav666 wrote:Certianly is a pre 85.5, I suspect though that as the bulk of it is being transplanted into 924 that the transmission is staying as well.

so i will try it.
saying that i have another box i took out of my first 924 when it went up in flames, last year,as far as i know its an LSD .
But i will cross that hurdle when i get to it.
first i need a ECU,the motronic unit,to get it running first,is there any other car with the same motronic unit ?

RE very excited with my new purchase
Looks like a cool project, the 924 trans will probable take the power ok, biggest headache will be connecting the two. IIRC the 924 torque tube will bolt to a 944 bellhousing, but the shafts are different 20mm in the 24 and 25mm in the 44. so you will need a custom coupler to join them or a custom clutch as well as the hydraulics. May be an easier option to sell the auto box and pick up a 924S/944 manual box and torque tube.
Good luck with it and lots of pictures please

Re: very excited with my new purchase
some pics of the work in the last week, not a lot done as i was trying to gett the 44 running ,it now fires up,fantastic engine in it,and plenty of pokew for an auto,so i have opted to keep it auto.
as you can see the shell is very good, but there are a few smallish dings here and there in the rear 1/4 panels that require attention, slow but satisfying work.

Re: very excited with my new purchase
This is going to be a great story to follow
One other thing you're going to need to do though is change the radiator, the automatic on the 944 has oil cooler pipes running from the auto box to the rad.
Admittedly though you could just plug it off

i don't see that being a problem,as i said i intend to put every last bit of the 944 into the 924,Mav666 wrote:This is going to be a great story to follow

Re: very excited with my new purchase
You'll just confuse people. 923 was the Porsche internal factory code for the 912E.
Re: very excited with my new purchase
thanks ,i wasn't aware of that, the only part of the 944 i won't be using is the rear 1/4 panels.RPUK wrote:You'll just confuse people. 923 was the Porsche internal factory code for the 912E.

Ah OK, I thought you were leaving the manual box from the 924 in place

Re: very excited with my new purchase
that was my original plan but after taking it for a spin,i've changed my mind, pulled out of my yard hit the throttle and next thing the rubbers burning,so i think the auto box is ideal, else i will be buying tyres every other week. and at a €180 a tyre i couldn't afford it too often ???Mav666 wrote:spannernut wrote:i don't see that being a problem,as i said i intend to put every last bit of the 944 into the 924,Mav666 wrote:This is going to be a great story to follow

Re: very excited with my new purchase
You're not wrong there!
I had the auto box on my last one which was a late model 924S, same engine and gearbox and loved it very responsive for an auto box

Re: very excited with my new purchase
i have to admit i've had a few big engined autos, for example i had a south african built ford capri peranna, with a ford 351 cleveland v8 and that wasn't as responsive, nor my old corvette, rambler rebel etc.Mav666 wrote:

so i was pleasantly surprised, and thought who needs a manual box, can't wait to get it finished, but the weathers a major issue at the moment.

Re: very excited with my new purchase
an update, removed the rear axle and complete gearbox torque tube as one, flattened the front panel and engine bay, then primed it,will flatten it again and re prime before paint is applied.
i will remove the remaining brake fuel pipes next weekend and give the underneath a good clean, then spray some gravitex on it for extra protection, then spray it in the next few weeks, weather permitting.
here's a few pics of the work done on sunday last.
