First Long Trip Empty First Long Trip

Post by Willr Fri 08 Apr 2011, 05:32

So, having got everything sorted, I decided to take the Porka over to our other office in Newmarket (normally blag a lift or take the wife's car) a round trip of about 250 miles.
She behaved impecably Smile and I was impressed with only half a tank of petrol being used.

However (ther's always a 'however'!) when I came off the M3 back into Basingrad I noticed a loud whine / whiring noise coming from the back Crying or Very sad I suspected gearbox or clutch, but it's a constant noise which doesn't change pitch no matter what you do. I guess fuel pump, but it's very noisy and seems to loudest right at the back outside the car (gearbox arex)! Anyone had a fuel pump go in this way? If so how long does the 'noise' last before the pump packs up? If not fuel pump does anyone have any other ideas what it might be?

The fuel pump is renowned for making buzzing/whining/clicking noises. They usually start making a racket about two months after being fitted and then last for years. The pump will last longer than you are prepared to put up with the row usually! So if it is the pump (sited just behind the O/S/R wheel then I personally wouldn't worry too much.

Great news on the long trip though. ThumbsUp

OK, fair enough, I think it's definately the pump then as I head my head near the o/s rear wheel and it was pretty bloody LOUD there!!
It's so close the the g/b though, my initial though was along the lines of FFS, this'll be expensive... Very Happy

The trip was made even better by the fantastic weather!! Cool

EDIT: I make it about 45 MPG on the run, all motorway never over 3500 RPM. That seems a lot! Laughing I was expecting mybe 30, not 45!!

Sounds like a good Porka then - not really sure what mph i get from mine but its not as good as yours - £50 normally gets me to a show and back - approx 200 miles

My fuel pump is the same aswell - everyone says that it needs changing due to the noise it makes but its been the same since i got it in jan 2008

Sounds very impressive. I reckon I manage about 30mpg in the S2 with the air-brakes down doing motorway cruising where we argue and then settle on about 80mph; I want to do 70-ish whilst it wants to do 90.

You say "nice weather", did you try taking the sunroof out? I had mine out the other day and it was excellent!

That's a shame Sad Sunroof really helps me get that 80's buzz (and is helpful 'cos the AC is fubar'd atm).

And the white one will still sit pretty Laughing

Strangely Will my '24S didn't have a sunroof either, one less thing to worry about really, and I can't open the one on the '44 still, the cable has a couple of kinks in it, it'll retract ok but won't have it going up!
