Re: The Price Of Fuel
141% come on tell me where you got that maths from?
That top pic works out @ £1.29.9 per ltr
Duty is 80p
cost from retailer 49.9p
ok see what you mean now. duty is 141% of the cost price. that is a scandle!
I was thinking what % of the £1.29.9 was tax!

Re: The Price Of Fuel
The worst bit is after you have paid the duty they slap VAT on top as well. FFS being taxed twice on one product.

Re: The Price Of Fuel
If someone in the private sector tried something along the same lines, They would have trading standards on the back in seconds. Then dragged before the courts, with every consumer program in the country after their blood.
And what do we do. we just winge and put up with it!

Re: The Price Of Fuel
yea but what can you do? We all need to use our cars so can't just stop buying it! The lorry blockades of 10 or so years ago seemed to have some effect, but it also meant we all had no fuel for a week which was crap!
It's a no win situation for the consumer as there is absolutely nothing you can do (except move to Australia!)

Re: The Price Of Fuel
The thing is the government need a certain amount of revenue, so if they take the duty off petrol it will only go on something else.
Your stuffed what ever happens.

Double it.
Neccessities such as fuel should be rebated not taxed.

I agree do not tax items that are vital to living just double the tax on items that we have a choice on whether to buy, like fags and booze.ozzie wrote:Double it.

Re: The Price Of Fuel
Yes but if you double the tax on things that you don't have to buy everyone will stop buying them so no tax revenue would be generated. So then everyone stops drinking and smoking so they would then have to double fuel duty and we would be paying £3 ltr!! you will not win trust me.
Re: The Price Of Fuel
What he said^^. Pains me to agree with him, but I think he is right on this occaision.

Indeed there will be savings in those areas, but not for maybe 10 - 15 years. In the short term there will be a defecit.

Re: The Price Of Fuel
VAT is now staying at 20% - like i did not see that one coming!
Its very hard to do the right thing - fuel is used by a majority of the population so the best thing to tax to make it fair.
If u double tax on cigs and booze then only one group suffers - why not double it for things like tvs, dvds, holidays - they are not essentials??
In my view - the biggest problem is that most of the industry has moved out the country due to rising costs and privatising most of the infastructure, was good as it lowered the dept from last time but neans the government noe really only gets moneyt from taxing the normal person(if theres such a thing)
Australia, in the last recession, spent billions re investing in its self - people who were out of work were given jobs on the railways, build new highways, upgrading other services so brought its self out of dept.
Why cant this country do the same?
