Good price? Empty Good price?

Post by Willr Thu 15 Mar 2012, 07:16

I need a load of work doing to the 24s to get it back in a roadworthy condition, just curious if the price I've got for the work is good?

The guy I'm thinking of taking it to is a friend of a friend who races a 70's 911 (has done for years, he's also a racing instructor at thruxton) and has always been a bit of a Porsche 'specialist' (not an ex-dealer mechanic though, just likes them!). He's happy to take my car on to 'fit in around other work' for £40 per hour. He's said that he'll estimate the time to do a job before doing it and let me know, and will then stick to the quoted time even if it takes him longer (if you see what i mean).
Not really sure what's going to need doing yet appart from rear wheel bearings, steering link bar and disks / pads all-round. There is a clunk on power take up, so it could include 2 new sets of CV joints as well (unless it's more serious!!) I'm guessing the bill will be more than I paid for the car, but it's worth it as I'm not selling it any time soon.

Thoughts anyone?

I would go with him if you are comfortable with his pedigree! Why not!?

To balance the argument, my local mechanic charges £40/hr.

I'd have it inspected first and agree on what will be done and how much labour he/you think each item will take. Then add 20% for contingency!

Its not a bad price for someone who knows their way around cars, but Rob's idea sounds better Wink

£40 an hour is not bad for an independent as most dealerships are around £120.

It'd be awesome to get some help down here if anyone is up for it... I have a pretty well equipped garage (have MIG and a fully stocked toolbox) but just don't have the ability to do most of my list! (i can do anything on a Mini though!) and have a kettle with lots of tea bags!!
I'm not entirely certain it's the CV's that are knackered, I've had a cursory glance, but not really looked into it too much. All I know is that there is quite a clunk on clutch take up!
Realistically it would have to be end of April as I need the cash to buy the parts...

ETA - I did have a 'plan' to start it this month, but have just had to spend all my cash on keeping my wifes bloody Renault on the road!! Seriously DO NOT ever buy a laguna Laughing

Don't help that the new models are over a year late and they only got 20 cars left for 5 months till they do finally get the new ones!
